Nuvola Player Adds Built-In Last.fm Scrobbling

2:46 AM

nuvola player

Nuvola Player integrates various cloud music services (Google Music, Grooveshark, Hype Machine and 8tracks) with your desktop: Mpris2 (Ubuntu Sound Menu integration), notifications, multimedia keys, Unity quicklists and more.

The latest Nuvola Player available in the Unstable PPA finally adds built-in Last.fm scrobbling for all the supported cloud music services. Until now, you had to use user scripts for this.

Other new features in the latest unstable Nuvola include: elementary-like AppMenu (can be enabled by selecting View > Only toolbar) and an option to automatically start playback on start-up (if possible).

To install the latest unstable Nuvola in Ubuntu, use the commands below:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nuvola-player-builders/unstable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install nuvolaplayer

Note: the built-in Last.fm scrobbling feature is not yet available for Ubuntu Lucid in the unstable PPA, because the builds failed.

Remember, this PPA is unstable! See also: Stable or Beta Nuvola PPAs (it will take a while until you get the features available in Unstable though).

Arch Linux users can install the latest unstable Nuvola via AUR.

For other Linux distributions: get the code via Launchpad (bzr branch lp:nuvola-player).

Guayadeque Music Player 0.3.5 Released With Multiple Collections, CUE Support

8:05 PM

guayadeque music player 0.3.5

Guayadeque is a fully featured Linux music player that comes with smart / dynamic playlists, iPod and portable device support, automatically downloads album covers, lets you play and record shoutcast radios,  Mpris v2 support and many more interesting features.

Guayadeque 0.3.5 has been released recently with some new features, like:
  • Multiple collections: you can define as many collections as you want
  • CUE support
  • Album browser zoon mode that allows to view and select tracks
  • All playlists, except sorted dynamic playlists, can be sorted using column headers
  • Change language via Preferences > General
  • Load defaults in shortcuts preferences
  • Bug fixes

There aren't many new features, but they've required a lot of work, especially the new multiple collections. With the introduction of this feature, the user interface was changed and there are now four view buttons which you can use to change between Library view, Album Browser, Tree view and Playlists.

You can use the new collections feature to create a separate audiobooks collection for instance, or define different collections for music stored in different places, etc.

To create a new collection, select Source > New collection, then enter a new collection name on the left and add some folders:

guayadeque collections

The new collections will then be displayed up under "Sources" and you can select to show them or not, among others:

guayadeque collections

And here's the new album browser zoom mode that lets you view and select tracks:

Updates: Audacious 3.2, Gnome Pie 0.4, Xnoise 0.1.31

8:03 PM

Audacious 3.2

audacious 3.2

Audacious 3.2 has finally been released. You probably already know what's new since Audacious 3.2 beta was already available in our unstable PPA, but here's the changelog again, just in case:
  • New music library plugin which lets you search your whole music collection and easily create playlists.
  • MPRIS v2 support which allows Audacious to integrate with the Ubuntu Sound Menu or GNOME Shell (via extensions like GNOME Shell Mediaplayer).
  • GTK interface improvements: a new button to toggle the new quick search on/off, buttons to close and add new playlist tabs, a drop-down menu to enable and disable visualization plugins, and a menu item to remove unavailable files from the playlist
  • Many changes related to handling large playlists (tens of thousands of entries) efficiently
  • Startup time, memory usage, and disk writes reduced signigicantly

To install the latest stable Audacious 3.2 in Ubuntu 11.10 or 12.04 from our main PPA, use the commands below:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install audacious

Gnome Pie 0.4

gnome pie

Gnome Pie 0.4, a slick application launcher, has been released a couple of days ago and the new version brings support for GTK3 as well as a new settings dialog which makes it much easier to add new pies and slices. Check out the video below to see the new settings dialog in action:

Unfortunately, there are a few issues in this release:
  • if there's a modal window with overlay scrollbars, the dialog is not modal anymore
  • the Ubuntu AppIndicator didn't show up for me in this release, although there is a regular systray icon. If this occurs for you too and you haven't whitelisted the systray in Ubuntu, here's how to access the settings: after running GNOME Pie for the first time, run it again and the settings dialog should pop up. Update: the bug has been fixed and the AppIndicator works again.

To install Gnome Pie 0.4 in Ubuntu, use the commands below:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:simonschneegans/testing
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gnome-pie

More info about Gnome Pie 0.4 @ http://www.simonschneegans.de/?p=503

Rhythmbox (2.95) Finally Ported To GTK3, Install It In Ubuntu 11.10

1:02 AM

Rhythmbox 2.95 gtk3

After a year, we finally have a new Rhythmbox release - 2.95, and the major change is that it has been ported to GTK+ 3. For the past year, most Linux distributions have packaged Rhythmbox from GIT because even though the Rhythmbox development is active, there were no new releases.

Besides full GNOME 3 support, the new version also comes with a redesign for some UI parts and according to the changelog, this is only the beginning. For now, it doesn't look anything like the "Music" mockups we've seen a while back though.

Other changes in Rhythmbox 2.95:
  • new album art database
  • Grilo plugin for UPNP and Jamendo
  • Rewritten visualization plugin (using clutter)
  • New encoding profile system
  • Plugins now based on libpeas
  • Much improved dbus media server plugin

The new visualization plugin isn't available in the WebUpd8 Rhythmbox PPA (see below) because I've used the official Ubuntu packaging, and this plugin was removed in Ubuntu because it uses Clutter, which the Ubuntu developers are trying to avoid.

Install Rhythmbox 2.95 in Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot

If you're using Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot, you can install the latest Rhythmbox 2.95 from our Rhythmbox PPA (I almost forgot we have a Rhythmbox PPA :D ):
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/rhythmbox
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install rhythmbox

If you use Ubuntu 12.04 alpha, Rhythmbox 2.95 should be available as an update already (it was uploaded today).

The Rhythmbox 2.95 source can be downloaded via ftp.gnome.org.

Audacious 3.2 Beta Released With New Music Library Plugin, Ubuntu Sound Menu / GNOME Shell Mediaplayer (MPRIS v2) Support

6:44 PM

Audacious is a highly configurable music player for GNOME that has a very low memory footprint and comes with many plugins as well as two interfaces: a GTK and a Winamp2-like interface (it also supports Winamp 2 skins).

Audacious 3.2 beta has been released recently, featuring a new music library plugin which lets you search your whole music collection and easily create playlists.

The new beta also finally adds partial MPRIS v2 support which allows Audacious to integrate with the Ubuntu Sound Menu or GNOME Shell (via extensions like GNOME Shell Mediaplayer).

Other changes in Audacious 3.2 beta since 3.1.x:
  • GTK interface improvements: a new button to toggle the new quick search on/off, buttons to close and add new playlist tabs, a drop-down menu to enable and disable visualization plugins, and a menu item to remove unavailable files from the playlist
  • Many changes related to handling large playlists (tens of thousands of entries) efficiently
  • Startup time, memory usage, and disk writes reduced signigicantly

The playlists created under Audacious 3.2 are not supported by older Audacious versions so once you install it, if you go back to older Audacious versions you won't be able to use any newly created playlists!

The new MPRIS plugin should be enabled by default (if somehow it's not, go to File > Preferences > Plugins > General and enable the "MPRIS 2 Server" plugin) - this plugin is required if you want Audacious to show up in the Ubuntu Sound Menu / GNOME Shell mediaplayer extensions.

The new search tool plugin is not enabled by default, so to enable it, go to File > Preferences > Plugins > General and enable the "Search Tool" plugin.

Install Audacious 3.2 beta in Ubuntu

The latest Audacious 3.2 beta is available in the WebUpd8 Unstable PPA, for Ubuntu 11.10 and 12.04 - add it and install Audacious 3.2 beta using the commands below:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/unstable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install audacious

To use Audacious with GNOME Shell Mediaplayer installed from extensions.gnome.org, you need to edit the extension metadata file (until the extension is updated to support it) called "metadata.json" which is located under:
~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/mediaplayer@patapon.info and add "audacious" under the "players" list. This is not required if you've installed the extension from the WebUpd8 GNOME3 PPA.

And speaking of Audacious, a new stable version was released too: 3.1.2 which doesn't come with any new features and only includes bug fixes. This new version is already is available in the main WebUpd8 PPA, so if you don't want to install the beta and want to use the latest stable Audacious 3.1.2 in Ubuntu 11.10 or 12.04, use the commands below:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install audacious

For other Linux distributions and Windows, see the Audacious download page.

Clementine Music Player Gets Spotify And Grooveshark Support

6:18 AM

Clementine

The latest Clementine music player available in the Clementine Development PPA got some very interesting new features: you can now listen to Grooveshark or Spotify songs through Clementine. For this, you need a Spotify Premium / Grooveshark Anywhere account though.

I've only tested the Grooveshark plugin (because I don't have a Spotify Premium account) and I can tell you it works pretty well already. Also, most of the Grooveshark features can be accessed from Clementine: you can add a song to your favourites, create new playlists, add songs to a Grooveshark playlist or get a song share url. What's not yet available is listening to a Grooveshark radio station.

Clementine preferences

Other changes include: reorganization of the Preferences dialog, you can configure the quality when converting music before copying it to a device, A new "Search for anything" box above the sidebar, Unity quicklists and more.

Update: the latest Clementine also comes with an option to disable the playlist background image (under Preferences > Behavior > Enable playlist background image).

If you want to test the latest Clementine development build in Ubuntu, use the commands below (warning: the packages may be unstable!):
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:me-davidsansome/clementine-dev
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install clementine

Install Audacious 3.1 In Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot

4:10 AM

Audacious 3.1

Audacious 3.1 has been released a few days ago, and as usual, it's available in the main WebUpd8 PPA.

Audacious is a highly configurable music player for GNOME that has a very low memory footprint and comes with many plugins as well as two interfaces: a GTK and a Winamp2-like interface (it also supports Winamp 2 skins). Here's the Winamp-like interface:

Audacious winamp interface

Changes in Audacious 3.1 since version 3.0:
  • New queue manager window
  • Audacious can now run in "headless" mode, controlled by DBus clients such as audtool
  • New configuration system, which does fewer disk writes and has a cleaner API
  • Visualization subsystem has been reworked to be more efficient and more accurate
  • Two unmaintained plugins (moodbar and rocklight) are removed
  • BS2B effect plugin can now be tweaked
  • The channel mixer plugin can now downmix some surround formats to stereo
  • New plugin to convert from mono to stereo and vice versa
  • Alarm plugin has been ported to GTK 3 and restored
  • Audio CD plugin now reads mixed data and audio CD's correctly
  • Dockable plugin windows such as LyricWiki now have a sane default window size

And many more. A complete list of changes in Audacious 3.1 can be found here.

Install Audacious 3.1 in Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot

Audacious 3.1

Because Audacious 3.x requires a very new ffmpeg version which is only available in the official Ubuntu 11.10 repositories (and uploading ffmpeg to the PPA would break too many stuff so that's not an option), Audacious 3.1 in the WebUpd8 PPA is only available for Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot. Add the PPA and install Audacious 3.1 using the commands below:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install audacious

SoundMenu-Like GNOME Shell Extension: "Mediasplayers"

5:26 PM

GNOME Shell Mediasplayers extension

"Mediasplayers" is a new GNOME Shell extension created by WebUpd8 reader ycDref, for controlling Banshee, Clementine or Rhythmbox from the GNOME Shell top bar.

The extension looks a lot like the Ubuntu Sound Menu and it displays the currently playing song, cover art and you can adjust the sound volume for the controlled music player, change tracks and more.

GNOME Shell Mediasplayers extension was initially designed for Banshee and it works great with it, but in my test it was a bit buggy with Clementine and Rhythmbox: the cover art is not displayed when using Rhythmbox and for both Clementine and Rhythmbox: when changing tracks from the application (not when using the extension to change tracks), the extension isn't updated. Also, the selected player is not saved and the extension reverts to Banshee after each restart.

So this is a great extension if you use Banshee but it needs some fixes for other music players.

To install the extension, install "git-core" and then run the following commands in a terminal:
cd && git clone https://github.com/Caccc/Gnome-shell-extension-Mediasplayers.git
sudo cp Gnome-shell-extension-Mediasplayers/mediasplayers@ycdref/org.gnome.shell.extensions.mediasplayers.gschema.xml /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/
cp -r Gnome-shell-extension-Mediasplayers/mediasplayers@ycdref ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/
sudo glib-compile-schemas /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/
chmod +x Gnome-shell-extension-Mediasplayers/mediasplayers\@ycdref/mediasplayers-settings.py
sudo cp Gnome-shell-extension-Mediasplayers/mediasplayers\@ycdref/mediasplayers-settings.py /usr/local/bin/mediasplayers-settings

Then, if you use Banshee, enable the MPRIS extension. And finally, reload GNOME Shell (ALT + F2 and enter "r" or log out).

For a similar extension (but without cover art), see: GNOME Shell Mediaplayer extension.

Update: the extension now supports Quodlibet too.

Thanks to ycDref for the tip!
