Updates: Audacious 3.2, Gnome Pie 0.4, Xnoise 0.1.31

Audacious 3.2

Audacious 3.2 has finally been released. You probably already know what's new since Audacious 3.2 beta was already available in our unstable PPA, but here's the changelog again, just in case:

• New music library plugin which lets you search your whole music collection and easily create playlists.
• MPRIS v2 support which allows Audacious to integrate with the Ubuntu Sound Menu or GNOME Shell (via extensions like GNOME Shell Mediaplayer).
• GTK interface improvements: a new button to toggle the new quick search on/off, buttons to close and add new playlist tabs, a drop-down menu to enable and disable visualization plugins, and a menu item to remove unavailable files from the playlist
• Many changes related to handling large playlists (tens of thousands of entries) efficiently
• Startup time, memory usage, and disk writes reduced signigicantly

To install the latest stable Audacious 3.2 in Ubuntu 11.10 or 12.04 from our main PPA, use the commands below:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install audacious

Gnome Pie 0.4

Gnome Pie 0.4, a slick application launcher, has been released a couple of days ago and the new version brings support for GTK3 as well as a new settings dialog which makes it much easier to add new pies and slices. Check out the video below to see the new settings dialog in action:

Unfortunately, there are a few issues in this release:

• if there's a modal window with overlay scrollbars, the dialog is not modal anymore
• the Ubuntu AppIndicator didn't show up for me in this release, although there is a regular systray icon. If this occurs for you too and you haven't whitelisted the systray in Ubuntu, here's how to access the settings: after running GNOME Pie for the first time, run it again and the settings dialog should pop up. Update: the bug has been fixed and the AppIndicator works again.

To install Gnome Pie 0.4 in Ubuntu, use the commands below:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:simonschneegans/testing
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gnome-pie

Xnoise 0.1.31

Xnoise Media Player, a lightweight audio/video player that uses a tracklist centric design, has reached version 0.1.31 and the major change is that it has finally been ported to GTK3. A complete list of changes can be found here.

Install Xnoise in Ubuntu 11.04 or 11.10 (there's also an Ubuntu 10.10 version in the PPA, but it's quite old) using the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:shkn/xnoise
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install xnoise

Audacious 3.2 Beta Released With New Music Library Plugin, Ubuntu Sound Menu / GNOME Shell Mediaplayer (MPRIS v2) Support

Audacious is a highly configurable music player for GNOME that has a very low memory footprint and comes with many plugins as well as two interfaces: a GTK and a Winamp2-like interface (it also supports Winamp 2 skins).


Audacious 3.2 beta has been released recently, featuring a new music library plugin which lets you search your whole music collection and easily create playlists. 

The new beta also finally adds partial MPRIS v2 support which allows Audacious to integrate with the Ubuntu Sound Menu or GNOME Shell (via extensions like GNOME Shell Mediaplayer).

Other changes in Audacious 3.2 beta since 3.1.x:

• GTK interface improvements: a new button to toggle the new quick search on/off, buttons to close and add new playlist tabs, a drop-down menu to enable and disable visualization plugins, and a menu item to remove unavailable files from the playlist
• Many changes related to handling large playlists (tens of thousands of entries) efficiently
• Startup time, memory usage, and disk writes reduced signigicantly

The playlists created under Audacious 3.2 are not supported by older Audacious versions so once you install it, if you go back to older Audacious versions you won't be able to use any newly created playlists!

The new MPRIS plugin should be enabled by default (if somehow it's not, go to File > Preferences > Plugins > General and enable the "MPRIS 2 Server" plugin) - this plugin is required if you want Audacious to show up in the Ubuntu Sound Menu / GNOME Shell mediaplayer extensions.

The new search tool plugin is not enabled by default, so to enable it, go to File > Preferences > Plugins > General and enable the "Search Tool" plugin.

Install Audacious 3.2 beta in Ubuntu

The latest Audacious 3.2 beta is available in the WebUpd8 Unstable PPA, for Ubuntu 11.10 and 12.04 - add it and install Audacious 3.2 beta using the commands below:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/unstable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install audacious

To use Audacious with GNOME Shell Mediaplayer installed from extensions.gnome.org, you need to edit the extension metadata file (until the extension is updated to support it) called "metadata.json" which is located under:
~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/mediaplayer@patapon.info and add "audacious" under the "players" list. This is not required if you've installed the extension from the WebUpd8 GNOME3 PPA.

And speaking of Audacious, a new stable version was released too: 3.1.2 which doesn't come with any new features and only includes bug fixes. This new version is already is available in the main WebUpd8 PPA, so if you don't want to install the beta and want to use the latest stable Audacious 3.1.2 in Ubuntu 11.10 or 12.04, use the commands below:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install audacious

Install Audacious 3.1 In Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot

Audacious 3.1 has been released a few days ago, and as usual, it's available in the main WebUpd8 PPA.

Audacious is a highly configurable music player for GNOME that has a very low memory footprint and comes with many plugins as well as two interfaces: a GTK and a Winamp2-like interface (it also supports Winamp 2 skins). Here's the Winamp-like interface:

Changes in Audacious 3.1 since version 3.0:

• New queue manager window
• Audacious can now run in "headless" mode, controlled by DBus clients such as audtool
• New configuration system, which does fewer disk writes and has a cleaner API
• Visualization subsystem has been reworked to be more efficient and more accurate
• Two unmaintained plugins (moodbar and rocklight) are removed
• BS2B effect plugin can now be tweaked
• The channel mixer plugin can now downmix some surround formats to stereo
• New plugin to convert from mono to stereo and vice versa
• Alarm plugin has been ported to GTK 3 and restored
• Audio CD plugin now reads mixed data and audio CD's correctly
• Dockable plugin windows such as LyricWiki now have a sane default window size

Install Audacious 3.1 in Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot

Because Audacious 3.x requires a very new ffmpeg version which is only available in the official Ubuntu 11.10 repositories (and uploading ffmpeg to the PPA would break too many stuff so that's not an option), Audacious 3.1 in the WebUpd8 PPA is only available for Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot. Add the PPA and install Audacious 3.1 using the commands below:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install audacious

Audacious 3.0.3 And 3.1 Alpha 1 Available For Ubuntu Oneiric (PPA)

Audacious is a versatile music player for GNOME that has a low memory footprint and a clean GTK interface. It also comes with a Winamp-like interface that supports Winamp 2.x skins.

You can switch between the GTK / Winamp interface by going to View > Interface.

Two new Audacious versions have been recently released: 3.0.3 and 3.1 alpha 1 and I've uploaded both to the WebUpd8 PPAs, for Ubuntu 11.10 (unfortunately Audacious 3.x requires a newer ffmpeg version which is only available in Oneiric). Let's see what's new in the latest Audacious 3.0.3 and 3.1 alpha:

Audacious 3.0.3 (stable):

Audacious 3 comes with a GTK3 interface and the latest stable version - 3.0.3 -, is just a minor bugfix release:

• libmodplug is no longer bundled with the modplug plugin due to security issues
• Fixed MP3 tracks in .cue files playing for only half of the correct length
• Fixed some erratic failures in the FFmpeg plugin due to insufficient thread locking
• Fixed a bug that prevented the layout of the GTK interface from being restored properly
• Showing and hiding Audacious with a global hotkey now works properly

Unfortunately, Audacious in the Ubuntu 11.10 repositories is still at version 2.4.4, so I've uploaded Audacious 3.0.3 to the main WebUpd8 PPA.

To install the latest stable Audacious (3.0.3) in Ubuntu 11.10, use the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install audacious

Audacious 3.1 alpha 1:

• New LADSPA host plugin
• Alarm plugin has been ported to GTK 3 and restored
• New "queue manager" window which shows the songs queued in the current playlist
• New plugin to convert from mono to stereo and vice versa
• Audacious can now run in "headless" mode, controlled by DBus clients such as audtool
• audtool can now query and set "stop after this song" option
• New option to delay loading song information until a song is played, reducing I/O
• Audio CD plugin now reads mixed data and audio CD's correctly
• Dockable plugin windows such as LyricWiki now have a sane default window size
• New configuration system, which does fewer disk writes and has a cleaner API

By adding the WebUpd8 Unstable PPA, Audacious 3.1 alpha 1 will overwrite Audacious 3.0.3 from the main WebUpd8 PPA! So only use this PPA for testing purposes or if you can't wait for some new feature (but make sure you know how to revert the changes in case something goes wrong).

To install Audacious 3.1 alpha 1 in Ubuntu 11.10, use the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/unstable
sudo apt-get update
