GIMP 2.8 (Stable) Finally Available For Download

3:47 PM

gimp 2.8 single window screenshot

After more than three years of development, GIMP 2.8 stable is finally available for download. The new version brings the long-awaited single-window mode (optional; you can still use multiple windows) as well as some other cool new features like on-canvas text editing, multi-column dock windows, a new set of brushes and many other features and improvements.

There's no official announcement for the latest GIMP 2.8 yet, but you can download the source from its FTP servers. Update: GIMP 2.8 has been officially released.

New features in GIMP 2.8 (stable):
  • Single Window Mode: you can finally use a single main window instead of overlapping floating windows. This is optional and can be turned on from the Windows menu.
  • On-canvas text editing: editing text is not performed in a separate window anymore.
  • Multi-column dock windows which makes the GIMP UI a lot more customizable
  • Improved screen real estate for dockable dialogs
  • Using "Save" now saves the file in the GIMP XCF format and it can't be used for saving PNG and other files. For non-XCF file types, you now have to use the "Export" menu entry.
  • You can now create layer groups which can be organized in tree-like structures
  • Brush system and tool preset improvements
  • You can now tag brushes and patterns
  • New slider widgets
  • A new set of default brushes and tool presets from Ramon Miranda (from GIMP Paint Studio)
  • Brushes can now be rotated
  • New open window navigation which displays a small preview for each tab
  • Tools rendering on canvas have been ported to Cairo to provide smooth antialiased graphics
  • A new "Lock Pixels" feature
  • Support for JPEG2000 and loading 16bit (RGB565) raw data.
  • Export color values to CSS, PHP, Java, Python or plain text
  • Core integration of the graph-based GEGL library
  • Export to PDF
  • New tool: Cage Transform which makes it possible to easily warp parts of objects using an adjustable user-defined polygonal frame
  • Many others

Update: the official GIMP 2.8 release notes are now available @ gimp.org.

Install GIMP 2.8 (stable) in Ubuntu

Important: The PPA below provides GIMP 2.8 final for Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot and while the packages in the PPA worked just fine in my tests under both Ubuntu 12.04 and 11.10, the PPA description says that there are some dependency issues, especially for Ubuntu 11.10, so use it at your own risk!

To add the PPA and install GIMP 2.8 stable in Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin or 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot, use the following commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:otto-kesselgulasch/gimp
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gimp

If you're upgrading from an older GIMP version, instead of the last command above, use the following:
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Revert the changes (go back to GIMP 2.6.x)

If you don't want to use the GIMP 2.8 packages from the PPA above for whatever reasons, you can purge it by using the following commands:
sudo apt-get install ppa-purge
sudo ppa-purge ppa:otto-kesselgulasch/gimp

ownCloud Android App Available For Download

2:38 AM

ownCloud, the complete, open source cloud file sync tool (includes music streaming, file management which supports sharing, calendar, contacts and more) is now available for Android.

This is the first public ownCloud Android app release and it doesn't have to many features yet, but it does have the basics: browse, upload, download and delete files. The application also supports previews for videos and photos but only for those on your device (which you want to upload) and not for those available on the ownCloud server.

Further more, for now the application doesn't support non-standard ports so if you've configured your ownCloud setup to use such a port, you won't be able to use the Android app for now.

Here are a few ownCloud for Android screenshots:

ownCloud for Android isn't yet available on Google Play, but it should be posted in about 4-6 weeks and around the same time, the iOS app should also be available in the AppStore (for now there's no iOS app available for download).

VLSUB: VLC Extension To Search And Download Subtitles

4:04 AM

VLSub is a VLC extensions to search and download subtitles from opensubtitles.org. The extension can search either based on the video hash or its IMDB title.

The extension can download subtitles in about 49 languages, including English, Arabic, Bulgarian, Czech, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish and more.

The extension should work with VLC 1.1.0+ (I've tested it with 1.1.x and 2.0) on Linux, Windows or Mac OSX.

Installation:

1. Download VLSub from HERE.

2. Create the ~/.local/share/vlc/lua/extensions folder (in case it doesn't exist):
mkdir -p ~/.local/share/vlc/lua/extensions

3. Move the downloaded .lua file to the ~/.local/share/vlc/lua/extensions folder (".local" is a hidden folder in your home directory so press CTRL + H to see it).

If you're using Windows, copy the .lua file under  C:/Program Files/VideoLAN/VLC/lua/extensions/

Now restart VLC and you should see VLSub under the VLC View menu:

Here, select to search for subtitles by video hash or IMDB ID, select the language you want the subtitles to be in, then click "Go". VLSub will try to find all matching subtitles and display a list:

Select one of the found subtitles and click OK. VLSub will now download the selected subtitle file and rename it to match your video, making it ready for viewing in VLC.

Install Tribler In Ubuntu Via PPA (Decentralized Bittorrent Application)

12:44 AM

tribler bittorrent ubuntu

Tribler is a cross-platform, decentralized Bittorrent application which means it doesn't require any torrent website to find and download content. Another cool feature is that you can stream videos directly, without having to fully download them firstly (only with VLC 1.1.x for now).

We simply don’t like unreliable servers. With Tribler we have achieved zero-seconds downtime over the past six years, all because we don’t rely on shaky foundations such as DNS, web servers or search portals.

Tribler is not new, but a recent TorrentFreak article titled "Tribler Makes BitTorrent Impossible to Shut Down" made it a lot more popular than it used to be, causing the main page to be taken offline (the download page is still there).

The recent Tribler popularity also resulted in more frequent updates by its developers so I though I'd make a PPA so Ubuntu users can easily get updates without having to manually check for and download new versions. You don't have to use the PPA, as Tribler offers .deb packages for download, but you won't get any automatic updates.

Install Tribler in Ubuntu via PPA

The official Tribler .deb package comes with VLC as a dependency. Using the package in the PPA, VLC is not a strict dependency but just a recommended package so you're not forced to install VLC. VLC is used to stream videos but this feature only works with VLC 1.1.x (it didn't work with the latest VLC 2.0 in my test).

Also, even though the package on the official Tribler website is said to only work with Ubuntu 11.04 and 11.10, I've uploaded packages for all Ubuntu versions between 10.04 and 12.04. And because VLC 1.1.0 is not a dependency, the package installs just fine on older Ubuntu versions which don't have VLC 1.1.0 in the repositories. I've tested it on Ubuntu 10.04, 11.10 and 12.04 and Tribler seemed to work just fine, but if it doesn't work properly for you, there's not much I can do.

To add the PPA and install Tribler in Ubuntu 12.04, 11.10, 11.04, 10.10 or 10.04, use the following commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/tribler
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install tribler

For Windows, Mac, direct .deb downloads or source code, see the Tribler download page. There's also an Arch Linux package in AUR.

Firefox To Get A New Default Theme, Other Enhancements

2:05 AM

According to the Firefox 2012 roadmap, Mozilla plans to introduce some major changes and new features this year, including a new default theme called Australis:

firefox new theme gnome 3 2012
Firefox - default GNOME 3 theme
firefox new theme ubuntu ambiance 2012
Firefox - Ubuntu (Ambiance theme)
firefox new theme osx 2012
Firefox - OSX
firefox new theme windows 7 2012
Firefox - Windows 7

Unfortunately, there are still no plans to support tabs in the titlebar for Linux (because of GTK limitations), but most other UI changes should be available for Linux too.

As you can see in the images above, Firefox will use Chrome-like curved tabs on all platforms, the bookmarks star will be separated from the locationBar and merged with the bookmarks menu and apparently, the menu will be moved next to the locationBar. Further more, a new built-in download panel should finally replace the separate Firefox download window. There's already a custom Firefox build that comes with an initial version of the new download panel:

firefox download panel

If you want to try the new theme, there's an unofficial Australis theme HERE (but it needs some work, at least under Linux).

Besides the changes mentioned above, there are many other new features that should land in Firefox this year:

firefox new tab page
  • a new tab page (an initial version is already available in the latest Firefox Aurora builds - screenshot above) powered by the Awesomebar, with a new "speed dial" and new home tab which lets you access the Firefox preferences, etc.
  • Chrome migration
  • Web Apps (-webapp mode) and WebApps Marketplace integration
  • reworked session restore and a new Firefox restore which lets you restore bookmarks, passwords, etc.
  • Firefox Share: share links / update status across social networks
  • Firefox Login: user-centric site logins - one login for all the websites you us
  • in-line Preferences Manager
  • seamless plug-in install and update experience
  • built-in PDF viewer
  • more!

For more info, visit the Firefox roadmap page.

Easily Create Impressive Presentations From PDF Files Or Images

2:10 AM

Impressive is a cross-platform tool to display presentations in a stylish way. The application supports PDF files or a folder containing images and besides beautiful slide transitions, Impressive features some useful presentation tools like: highlight boxes, which can be used to draw attention to a specific part of the slide, spotlight effect which is kind of like a highlight box but dynamic, and a screen overview which you can use to easily select a slide.

Impressive is highly customizable too, but unfortunately there's no GUI front-end (at least, that I know of). However, the default settings should be good enough for most people and to run it, all you have to do is open a terminal and type: "impressive /path/to/some_presentation.pdf" or "impressive /path/to/image/folder/" and the presentation should start.

Basic Impressive usage:

- Use left click to advance to a new slide and right click to go back to the previous slide (the arrow keys work too).

- To create a highlight box, draw a rectangle using your left mouse button:

- For a dynamic highlighting (spotlight effect), press the ENTER key - you can adjust its size using the mouse wheel:

- To zoom in/out, press the "z" key

- For an overview of all your slides, press TAB:

Impressive also comes with many command line options: you can configure the transitions, rotate pages, specify the window geometry, set the start page, change the duration and so on. To see all the available options, type:
impressive --help

You can also check out the Impressive documentation online.

Here's quick video I've recorded, demoing Impressive:

(if the video doesn't show up, click here)

Download Impressive

Impressive is available in the Ubuntu repositories so if you use Ubuntu, simply click the button below to install it:

If you prefer to install Impressive from the command line, open a terminal and copy/paste the following command:
sudo apt-get install impressive

Download Impressive source or Windows (portable) binaries download it via Sourceforge.

Compare And Synchronize Folders With FreeFileSync

2:27 AM

FreeFileSync is a muti-platform folder comparison and synchronization tool that comes with some very useful features like support for multiple folder pairs, binary files support, can create "batch files" which can be used to automate folder synchronization and others.

FreeFileSync Ubuntu

FreeFileSync features:
  • Multiple pre-defined synchronization settings: Automatic (propagate changes on both sides), Mirror (right folder is modified to exactly match left folder), Update (copy new or updated files to right folder) as well as a custom mode
  • Detect moved, renamed, conflicting files and propagate deletions
  • bytewise / by date file comparison and synchronization
  • Support for multiple folder pairs
  • Support for Linux Symbolic Links and Windows Junction Points
  • Network support
  • Create batch jobs for automated synchronization. You can then run them from the command line, simply double click the file, create a cron job, etc.
  • Filter functionality to include/exclude files from synchronization (you can exclude files by type, date, size
  • Copy file and directory permissions
  • You can select what to do when an error occurs or when the synchronization is completed
  • Easily exclude files from being synced
  • Save/load configurations
  • More
If you're wondering how FreeFileSync compares to other synchronization tools, check out THIS page on Wikipedia.

While the interface is intuitive and highly configurable, it insists on using its own icons which doesn't look too good, but other than this, FreeFileSync is a really great synchronization tool.

FreeFileSync comes with a small application called RealtimeSync that lets you monitor files or folders for changes or when they become available (for example when you insert an USB stick) and execute a command which can be a batch job created with FreeFileSync or any other command.

The application even comes with Unity launcher progress bar support, a feature that Grsync (a great rsync GUI) also got recently.

FreeFileSync is not new - in fact, it's been around for more than 3 years -, but it constantly gets new features and improvements (changelogs available here) which is something I for one always appreciate.

Install FreeFileSync in Ubuntu

Ubuntu Oneiric, Natty and Maverick users can install FreeFileSync from its PPA - open a terminal and copy/paste the following commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:freefilesync/ffs
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install freefilesync

Please note that at the time I'm writing this, the latest FreeFileSync 5.0 is only available for Oneiric. For older Ubuntu releases, there are older FreeFileSync versions (4.0 for Natty and 3.17 for Maverick). If you want the latest version, download it via SourceForge.

There's also a Debian PPA which you can use to install FreeFileSync without any Ubuntu dependencies and an AUR package for Arch Linux users (but it hasn't been updated to the latest version yet)

For other Linux distributions and Windows, download FreeFileSync via SourceForge.

ownCloud 3 Gets Built-In Text Editor, PDF Viewer, Other Improvements

10:39 PM

ownCloud is a free software alternative to some proprietary web services that includes music streaming, file management which supports sharing, calendar, contacts and more:

ownCloud offers the ease-of-use of Dropbox and box.net with a more secure, transparently managed offering. As an open source project ownCloud 3 offers innovative features, a flexible architecture and no vendor lock in.

ownCloud 3 has been released recently with some cool new features, such as:

- Built-in cloud text editor that supports 35 programming languages for syntax highlighting, keyboard shortcuts support, automatic indent and outdent, unstructured / user code folding and live syntax checker (for JavaScript, Coffee and CSS). Editing more advanced file types like .doc and .odt is planned for a future release:

owncloud 3 text editor
ownCloud text editor

- Integrated PDF viewer:

owncloud 3

- Photo gallery application with automatic album generation and dynamic covers:

owncloud 3

Other changes in ownCloud 3:
  • Application Store: support for installing third party applications and addons through a central repository, directly from the ownCloud interface
  • new calendar interface
  • various calendar and contacts improvements
  • A new "external" application that lets you integrate external applications (like an external webmail interface for instance) into the ownCloud interface

The complete list of new features and improvements can be found HERE.

Unfortunately, this release doesn't bring encryption, a desktop sync client or versioning/recovery yet, features which many consider extremely important, but fortunately, all of these features are top priority so hopefully we'll see all of them in a future ownCloud release.

Download / try ownCloud

If you want to try out ownCloud without installing it, head over to http://demo.owncloud.org

ownCloud is available in the official Ubuntu repositories, but that's a very old version (pre version 2) so to install the latest ownCloud in Ubuntu, see our initial post about ownCloud: ownCloud: Your Personal Cloud Server.

Arch Linux users can install ownCloud via AUR, however, at the time I'm writing this post, the package hasn't been updated with the latest ownCloud 3.

Download ownCloud | Update: the ownCloud website seems to be down for now, so here's an alternate download link (via ownCloud @ Twitter).

Beets Music Tagger: Command Line Tool To Fix Metadata And Organize Your Music Library

8:53 PM

beets is a cross-platform command line music tagger and organizer which you can use to "get your music collection right once and for all".

It can improve your music collection metadata by using MusicBrainz, download cover art for all your albums, reorganize your music files, fix filenames and more.

Further more, beets is extensible through plugins which add extra functionality like  embedding or extracting album art from files, fetch lyrics for all your songs, clean up tags and and there's even a HTML5 web player (though it's very basic and can't do too much for now).

beets

While beets tries to automatically get the metadata based on already existing tags,  if the similarity is under 95%, beets will prompt you to select the best match so the process is not fully automated (though you can set it to automatically skip albums that need user input). Also, beets might not be able to automatically get the metadata if some albums don't have any tags at all.

In my test, beets worked great to fix bad or missing tags, but fetching the album art didn't work so great: it was able to download album art for only about 25% of the albums.

Beets introduction video

Here's a introduction video for beets, created by its developer:

Installation

To install beets in Ubuntu, you need to install its dependencies firstly:
sudo apt-get install python-dev python-setuptools python-pip

Then, install beets using the following command
sudo pip install beets

In Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin, you can install beets from the official repositories.

For Arch Linux, get the latest version via AUR.

beets installation for other Linux distributions, Windows and Mac OS X: Getting Started with beets.

How to use beets

Firstly, create a new file called '.beetsconfig' in your home directory and open it with a text editor. For instance, run this command if you have Gedit installed:
gedit ~/.beetsconfig

And in this file, copy/paste the following:
[beets]
directory: /path/to/music
library: /path/to/musiclibrary.blb

Where:
  • "directory" is the path to the directory where your music will be copied after it has been re-organized by beets (to get beets to use your current directory structure and don't copy your music, see below).
  • "library" is the path do your music library database (the file doesn't initially exist, so just enter the path to where you want it to be stored)

Then save the file. All available configuration options are available HERE.

Now you can start importing your music to the beets library. By default, beets will copy the imported music into the directory you specified in the config file - to start this process (it may take a long time!), use the command below:
beet import /path/to/music

If you want beets to use your current directory structure and don't copy the music to the directory defined in its configuration, use "-C":
beet import -C /path/to/music

To only import files, without autotagging, use "-A":
beet import -A /path/to/music

You can also set beets not to write the tags to the files but keep them in its database only ("-W"), never prompt for input when importing ("-q" - quiet mode) and more.

Enabling acoustic fingerprinting for beets

beets can use acoustic fingerprinting (through Chromaprint/Acoustid), a technique for identifying songs based on audio signal instead of using metadata information via a plugin. There is a downside to using it though: it uses a lot more CPU and memory than the default tagger. If this is not an inconvenient for you, install it using the following commands:
sudo apt-get install apt-get install python-gst0.10-dev gstreamer0.10-plugins-good gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly
sudo pip install pyacoustid

Then, to enable the Chromaprint/Acoustid plugin, open the beets config file (see above) and paste this under "[beets]":
plugins: chroma

For more info about beets, including: using the auto-tagger, more 'beet' commands (list, add, etc), plugins, etc., see the beets documentation.

Thanks to Pablo Jimeno for the tip!

Manage Your PDF Documents With Mendeley

9:37 PM

mendeley desktop ubuntu

Mendeley is a free to use, cross-platform PDF organizer with some extra features that make document management and research easier:
  • Reference manager (generate citations and bibliographies in Microsoft Word, OpenOffice / LibreOffice)
  • PDF viewer (can also add annotations, etc.)
  • Import and organize PDFs
  • Collaborate / share documents
  • Backup and cloud sync

The application is basically a library manager for your PDF files that lets you organize and even store your documents in the cloud (without encryption) and can be used from Linux, Windows, Mac, mobile devices or the web. With a free account, you get 500MB of personal storage and another 500MB of shared space and you can also create both public and private groups to easily share documents with friends or colleagues.

Tabbed interface, supports annotations

mendeley linux

Mendeley comes with a built-in PDF viewer and you can open multiple PDF files in the same time (tabbed interface), it supports annotations, highlights and sticky notes which can be shared with your friends, exported (with annotations), printed, etc.

Easy to search PDF library, metadata can be fetched automatically

mendeley linux

Using Mendeley, it's very easy to search your PDF library because it automatically extracts metadata from your documents. If your PDF files lack metadata (title, author, and so on) information, the application can try to automatically retrieve it via Google Scholar or you can add this info manually.

Mendeley can even watch folders on your computer for new PDF files, can import references from Zotero, Endnote or Refworks and can export to BibTex, RIS and EndNote XML. It can also install a reference manager that works with Microsoft Word or OpenOffice / LibreOffice and BibTeX.

Download

A (free) Mendeley account is required to use the application and you'll be prompted to enter your username and password or create an account when running the application.
