Wallch: Wallpaper Changer For GNOME 3 / Unity

Wallch is an automatic wallpaper changer that works with GNOME 3 (and Unity). It features desktop/sound notifications, random image and time changing, live earth wallpaper (a 'live' picture of the earth updated every half hour), taking screenshots or webcam image.

The application also comes with Unity launcher support, so you can start or stop Wallch, select the next or previous wallpaper or start the live earth wallpaper from the Unity launcher:

Recently, the application got a new feature to automatically use a picture from Wikipedia of the day as wallpaper, as well as folder monitor and a redesigned UI. You also have an option to save the current picture of the day for later use.

To activate the picture of the day wallpaper or live earth wallpaper, firstly make sure the regular wallpaper changer is stopped (if started, click "Stop" in the main Wallch UI), then select Edit > Extras and you'll find a button to activate the live earth wallpaper or picture of the day. Here, you'll also find the folder monitor which adds any images you copy to a given folder to the Wallch wallpaper list.

The latest Wallch 3.0 is available in the Ubuntu 12.04 LTS repositories so to install Wallch, click the button below:

Or run the following command in a terminal:

sudo apt-get install wallch

Wallch is also available for Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot, but it's an older version. To add the Wallch PPA and install it in Ubuntu 11.10, use the commands below:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:wallch/wallch-ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install wallch

Community Wallpapers From Ubuntu Karmic To Oneiric, Available In The Ubuntu 12.04 Repositories

In the Ubuntu 12.04 community wallpapers post, I was telling you about some plans to provide packages for the wallpapers in each Ubuntu version. Well, as it turns out, this hasn't been postponed after all and an updated "ubuntu-wallpapers" package has landed in Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin which lets you install the community wallpapers from Ubuntu Karmic, Lucid, Maverick, Natty, Oneiric and obviously, Precise.

You can either get the wallpapers from a specific Ubuntu version by installing the "ubuntu-wallpapers-UBUNTU-VERSION" package (example: ubuntu-wallpapers-karmic), or all the wallpapers from Karmic to Precise, by using the following command:

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-wallpapers-karmic ubuntu-wallpapers-lucid ubuntu-wallpapers-maverick ubuntu-wallpapers-natty ubuntu-wallpapers-oneiric ubuntu-wallpapers-precise

If you're not using Ubuntu 12.04 and want all the community wallpapers from Ubuntu Karmic to Precise, download THIS archive.

Ubuntu 12.04 Wallpapers Updated (Community, Default Wallpaper)

The "ubuntu-wallpapers" package has just been updated and Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin now includes wallpapers from the community contest as well as the new default wallpaper:

Unfortunately, after installing the update that brings the new wallpapers in Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin, the old wallpapers (if you had the Ubuntu 11.10 wallpapers installed for instance) are removed. The package has been updated and the wallpapers for each Ubuntu version from Karmic to Precise are now available in their own package.

The wallpapers have a 1920x1280 resolution but if you want, you can download the wallpapers in a higher resolution from HERE.

Create A Wallpaper Slideshow With XML Background Creator For GNOME 3

"XML Animated Background Creator" is a Nautilus script to easily generate XML wallpaper slideshows (wallpapers that change automatically) for GNOME 3.

There used to be many such applications for GNOME 2, but they can't change the background anymore because they still use GConf, while the background settings are now stored in DConf. And since XML Animated Background Creator is easy to use and install on any Linux distribution, I've upgraded it to work with GNOME 3 (it works with any "shell": Unity, GNOME Shell, fallback session).

To install XML Animated Background Creator, download the Nautilus script, extract it in your home folder and run the following commands in a terminal:

cd ~/XMLBACK
./install.sh

For Fedora, open the install.sh file and replace "gksu" with "beesu" (also, make sure beesu is installed: "sudo yum install beesu").

To create a XML slideshow background, copy all the wallpapers you want to use in your new XML background in a folder, then right click the folder and select Scripts > create xml background.

XML Animated Background Creator will then prompt you to select the time between each wallpaper (5 minutes by default), the transition duration (5 seconds by default), and xml file name. At the end, it also asks you if you want to use the newly generated .xml background file as your wallpaper.

Extra tip: in GNOME 3, you can't select a XML slideshow wallpaper through the Appearance dialog. You don't have to do this manually if you're using XML Background Creator since the script asks you if you want to apply a newly created .xml background file, however, if you want to manually set an XML wallpaper in GNOME 3, use the following command:

gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri 'file:///path/to/background.xml'

Where /path/to/ is the path to your background.xml (or whatever you've called it) file.

Download The Wallpapers From GMail HD Themes

Gmail has launched a new design recently and the themes were updated with some beautiful backgrounds. WebUpd8 reader Dmitry Shachnev has discovered that you can download these backgrounds so you can use them as desktop wallpapers.

The wallpapers come in different sizes: 1050x600, 1280x800, 1440x900, 1680x1050 and 1920x1200 (might be others too). Here are a few of these Gmail wallpapers (posted only as previews, don't try to download them - see below):

Since I hate clicking 30 times for something that can be done by running a few commands, I've created a script that automatically downloads all the Gmail HD themes wallpapers (around 31). You can specify the resolution too. To use it, copy/paste the following commands in a terminal (or download the script from HERE):

sudo apt-get install wget
cd && wget http://webupd8.googlecode.com/files/gmail-backgrounds_0.2.tar.gz
tar -xvf gmail-backgrounds_0.2.tar.gz
chmod +x gmail-backgrounds
./gmail-backgrounds RESOLUTION

In the last command above, replace RESOLUTION with one of the following: 1050x600, 1280x800, 1440x900, 1680x1050 or 1920x1200. The script will create a folder called "gmail-wallpapers" and will download all wallpapers inside this folder.

If you want to manually download the wallpapers, you can find a list of links HERE. For a different resolution, replace "1920x1200" in each link with the resolution you want (see above).

Wally Wallpaper Changer 2.4.2 Released With GNOME Shell Support

Wally is a cross-platform wallpaper changer which uses multiple sources for getting the images: local folders, Flickr, Google, Yahoo!, Panoramio, DeviantArt, Vladstudio, Photobucket, Buzznet, Picasa, and Smugmug images.

Features:

change wallpaper manually / automatically (on a given interval)
rotate images according to EXIF information
set wallpaper position (centered, tiled, etc.)
you can set downloaded photos to be at least 1/4, 3/4 or larger than the desktop size
stores downloaded images on the disk so you can use them later on
more

Wally 2.4.2 was released a few days ago, finally getting GNOME3/GNOME Shell support. Also, the Bing module was removed because apparently Microsoft didn't accept Wally's way of using Bing.

To get Wally to work on Ubuntu, you need to whitelist its icon so it's displayed in the notification area - see THIS article for a complete how-to. But please note that in my test, Wally didn't work in Ubuntu 11.10 with Unity, even though it worked under the same Ubuntu version but using GNOME Shell (as well as Unity under Ubuntu 11.04).

Wally wallpaper changer works on Linux (KDE3, KDE4, Gnome, GnomeShell, XFCE4, Fluxbox and more), Windows and Mac OSX.

Download Wally (.deb, .dmg, .exe and source files; there are no .rpm files available for the latest Wally 2.4.2 yet)
