Ubuntu Tweak 0.7.0 has been released today, bringing some important new features, especially for Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin which will be released tomorrow.

As you probably know, starting with version 0.6, Ubuntu Tweak had lost some of its main features. Well, with the latest 0.7.0, some of these features are back: App Center, Source Center (which is a PPA database that you can easily enable/disable from Ubuntu Tweak), Templates and Scripts. The Source Center comes with integrated PPA Purge feature and App Center with "Installed Apps" view:

  • Global fuzzy search so you can easily find various settings in Ubuntu Tweak
  • More Unity settings and new Workspace settings

Ubuntu Tweak 0.6 Has Been Released

7:33 PM

Ubuntu Tweak 0.6 (stable) has finally been released. The new version comes with a revamped user interface and many new features, but also without some of its old features: App and Source Center are no longer available in Ubuntu Tweak because, according to the Ubuntu Tweak developer, even though these features were liked by many users, they caused a lot of problems and also, they weren't exactly tweaks.

By the way, if you want to search for PPAs, you can use Y PPA Manager.

We've already covered Ubuntu Tweak 0.6, so I'll only post a small recap for what's new.

New features in Ubuntu Tweak 0.6:
  • revamped user interface
  • plugins support
  • Unity-specific (for both 2D and 3D) settings and tweaks
  • built-in Computer Janitor that lets you clear various cached/uneeded files or packages
  • option to change GTK3, icon theme and fonts
  • LightDM tweaks
  • a new overview tab which displays various system info
  • backup feature for the source editor
  • natural scrolling tweak

Install Ubuntu Tweak 0.6 (stable)

Ubuntu Tweak 0.6 (stable) is only available for Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot for now. Add the Ubuntu Tweak PPA and install it using the commands below:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tualatrix/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-tweak

Or just download the .deb via Launchpad.

The Ubuntu Tweak Testing PPA (ppa:ubuntu-tweak-testing/ppa) currently provides the latest stable Ubuntu Tweak, but if you want to continue using the stable version, I recommend adding the stable PPA and removing the testing PPA as newer testing versions might be uploaded soon.

Test Ubuntu Tweak 0.6, Now With Unity Settings, Theme Changer And More

6:26 AM

Ubuntu Tweak 0.6 is almost ready and the new version will be getting some cool new features such as Unity settings, an option to change the GTK or icon theme, a package cleaner ("Janitor") and more. The new version will only support Ubuntu 11.10 or later and will come with tweaks for three desktop environments: Unity, Unity 2D and GNOME Shell.

I've wanted to wait until Ubuntu Tweak 0.6 stable is released to post this, but it's been a really long time since a stable Ubuntu Tweak version, so I've decided to post about it already. And there's another reason: I wanted to warn you about a bug in the latest Ubuntu Tweak 0.6 daily builds (because I'm sure some of you are already using the testing PPA): in my test (2 tests actually), Unity crashes when clicking the Ubuntu Tweak 0.6 Unity settings while using Unity Bottom Launcher! Update: the bug has been fixed. However, Ubuntu Tweak Unity settings won't work with Unityshell Rotated (Bottom Unity Launcher), even if it's not enabled.

What's new in Ubuntu Tweak 0.6

The latest Ubuntu Tweak 0.6 builds come with a completely new UI as well as lots of new features which you'll see below.

The feature I like the most in Ubuntu Tweak 0.6 is that you can use it to change the GTK or icon theme. So you no longer have to use GNOME Tweak Tool (which installs GNOME Shell automatically) or the command line for this:

You can also change the fonts, login screen wallpaper, tweak Nautilus and many other stuff. You'll even find an option to turn on Natural Scrolling (under Tweaks > Miscellaneous).

Another cool new feature lets you easily configure Unity:

Ubuntu Tweak will also have a new first screen information tab (Overview):

And finally, there's also a new built-in Computer Janitor that lets you clear various cached/uneeded files or packages:

For now, the App Center an Source Center are missing from Ubuntu Tweak 0.6.

Test Ubuntu Tweak 0.6

Using the Ubuntu Tweak Testing PPA, your current stable Ubuntu Tweak package will be replaced with the latest Ubuntu Tweak daily build.

Ubuntu Tweak 0.6 daily builds are available in the Ubuntu Tweak Testing PPA so if you want to test it already, use the commands below (available for Ubuntu Oneiric only for now):
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-tweak-testing/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-tweak

Report any bugs you may find @ Launchpad.
