Install LibreOffice 3.5.0 In Ubuntu 11.10 Or 10.04 Via PPA

7:44 PM

libreoffice 3.5.0

A quick update for Ubuntu users: LibreOffice 3.5.0 is now available in its official PPA for Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot and 10.04 Lucid Lynx users.

LibreOffice 3.5.0 could already be manually installed by downloading the debs from its website, but the global menu doesn't seem to work using this method and there are some desktop integration issues with KDE.

Add the PPA and upgrade to LibreOffice 3.5.0

To add the PPA and upgrade to the latest LibreOffice 3.5.0 in Ubuntu 11.10 or 10.04, copy/paste the following commands in a terminal:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libreoffice/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

If you don't want to use "dist-upgrade", use the Update Manager or Synaptic to upgrade the packages.

The LibreOffice global menu should work when using the packages in the PPA. If it doesn't, removing and reinstalling it should get it working:
sudo apt-get remove lo-menubar
sudo apt-get install lo-menubar

That's it for Ubuntu 11.10.

If you are using Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx with OpenOffice and want to replace it with LibreOffice 3.5 (you can't have both), add the PPA (first two commands above), then use the following commands to remove OpenOffice and install LibreOffice:
sudo apt-get purge openoffice*
sudo apt-get install libreoffice

And finally to get better desktop integration:

- for GNOME:
sudo apt-get install libreoffice-gnome
- for KDE:
sudo apt-get install libreoffice-kde

Install LibreOffice 3.5 in Ubuntu

Only do this if you know what you are doing! It's probably better to wait for the LibreOffice PPA to be updated but if you can't wait, here's how to install the latest LibreOffice 3.5 in Ubuntu.

1. If you want to install LibreOffice 3.5 in Ubuntu, you can download the .deb files available on the LibreOffice download page.

2. Before installing it, remove LibreOffice - without  (the packages available on the LibreOffice download page are called "libreoffice3.5" instead of just "libreoffice"):
sudo apt-get remove libreoffice-core

3. You can now extract the downloaded archive, navigate to its folder using a terminal (to the "DEBS" directory) and run:
sudo dpkg -i *.deb

4. Then navigate to the "desktop-integration" (you'll find it in the "DEBS" directory) folder and run:
sudo dpkg -i *.deb

If you want to revert to the LibreOffice version available in the official Ubuntu repositories, use the commands below:
sudo apt-get remove libreoffice3.5* libobasis*
sudo apt-get install libreoffice-base-core libreoffice-calc libreoffice-common libreoffice-core libreoffice-draw libreoffice-emailmerge libreoffice-gnome libreoffice-gtk libreoffice-help-en-us libreoffice-impress libreoffice-math libreoffice-ogltrans libreoffice-style-human libreoffice-writer

The new version comes with many bug fixes, including a fix for horizontal scrollbars with KDE oxygen style and many fixed crashes. The changelog also mentions that Impress 3D transitions should work again, but they didn't work in my test (install the "libreoffice-ogltrans" package to try them).

You can read the official LibreOffice 3.4.5 release announcement, here.

To upgrade to LibreOffice 3.4.5 in Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot, use the commands below:

Get LibreOffice Thumbnails In Nautilus With OOO Thumbnailer

6:54 PM

ooo thumbnailer

OOO Thubnailer is a Nautilus utility that provides thumbnails for LibreOffice / OpenOffice.org documents, presentations, spreadsheets and drawings.

Its description also mentions that it should work with Microsoft Office files, but this didn't work in my test (it seems this occurs because I've saved the files to .doc/docx using LibreOffice).

Besides the thumbnails, OOO Thumbnailer also displays the file type icon in the bottom right corner of the thumbnail.

The package was recently updated to work with LibreOffice too (previously it had OpenOffice.org as a depenency) and to support GNOME 3 / Nautilus 3.

To install OOO Thumbnailer in Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot, use the commands below:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:flimm/ooo-thumbnailer
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ooo-thumbnailer

Once installed, restart Nautilus:
nautilus -q

To download the source code, report a bug and so on, see the OOO Thumbnailer page on Launchpad.

Faenza Icons For LibreOffice Toolbar

12:06 AM

Rho from seekngeek, has created a Faenza icon pack for the LibreOffice toolbar, based on Kado20es' work. The icon pack is still in beta but it looks great already:

LibreOffice Faenza toolbar icons

LibreOffice Faenza Icon pack will only replace the LibreOffice toolbar icons with Faenza monochrome icons and will not affect the LibreOffice application icons. Also, you don't have to use Faenza as the system icon theme to use the LibreOffice Faenza icons!

Installation

Firstly, download LibreOffice Faenza Icons Mod in your home folder and then run the commands below, depending on how you've installed LibreOffice:

- for LibreOffice installed from the official Ubuntu repositories or the LibreOffice PPA:

sudo apt-get install libreoffice-style-crystal
cd
mv ~/libreoffice_faenzaMOD.zip ~/images_crystal.zip
sudo mv /usr/share/libreoffice/basis-link/share/config/images_crystal.zip /usr/share/libreoffice/basis-link/share/config/images_crystal.orig.zip && sudo mv ~/images_crystal.zip /usr/share/libreoffice/basis-link/share/config/images_crystal.zip

Please note that the installation instructions above will overwrite the original "libreoffice-style-crystal" (which isn't really a problem is you're not using this style or you don't plan on using it; either way, the commands above will create a backup of the original Crystal style). If you want to replace a different LibreOffice style, see the instructions @ LibreOffice Faenza Icons Mod Gnome Look page.

- for LibreOffice 3.3 downloaded from the LibreOffice website:
cd
mv ~/libreoffice_faenzaMOD.zip ~/images.zip
sudo mv /opt/libreoffice3.3/basis3.3/share/config/images.zip /opt/libreoffice3.3/basis3.3/share/config/images_crystal.orig.zip && sudo mv ~/images.zip /opt/libreoffice3.3/basis3.3/share/config/images.zip

- for LibreOffice 3.4 downloaded from the LibreOffice website:

cd
mv ~/libreoffice_faenzaMOD.zip ~/images.zip
sudo mv /opt/libreoffice3.4/basis3.4/share/config/images.zip /opt/libreoffice3.4/basis3.4/share/config/images_crystal.orig.zip && sudo mv ~/images.zip /opt/libreoffice3.4/basis3.4/share/config/images.zip

Once installed, open LibreOffice, select Tools > Options and under "LibreOffice", click on "View" and select "Crystal" (under "Icon size and style"):

LibreOffice change icons

Update: for ArchLinux, use the following path: "/usr/lib/libreoffice/share/config/images_brand.zip" (thanks to Rationalperseus)

Revert the changes

If you want to use the original style, simply open the LibreOffice Options and select "Automatic" under LibreOffice > View.

Also, a back up of the original LibreOffice Crystal style is available (if you've used the commands above) under "/usr/share/libreoffice/basis-link/share/config/images_crystal.orig.zip" for LibreOffice installed from the Ubuntu repositories/PPA and "/opt/libreoffice3.3/basis3.3/share/config/images_crystal.orig.zip" or "/opt/libreoffice3.4/basis3.4/share/config/images_crystal.orig.zip" for LibreOffice downloaded from its website. To restore the "Crystal" style, use the commands below:

- For LibreOffice installed via Ubuntu repositories / PPA:
sudo rm /usr/share/libreoffice/basis-link/share/config/images_crystal.zip
sudo mv /usr/share/libreoffice/basis-link/share/config/images_crystal.orig.zip /usr/share/libreoffice/basis-link/share/config/images_crystal.zip

- For LibreOffice 3.3 downloaded from its website:
sudo rm /opt/libreoffice3.3/basis3.3/share/config/images.zip
sudo mv /opt/libreoffice3.3/basis3.3/share/config/images_crystal.orig.zip /opt/libreoffice3.3/basis3.3/share/config/images.zip

- For LibreOffice 3.4 downloaded from its website:
sudo rm /opt/libreoffice3.4/basis3.4/share/config/images.zip
sudo mv /opt/libreoffice3.4/basis3.4/share/config/images_crystal.orig.zip /opt/libreoffice3.4/basis3.4/share/config/images.zip

Please note that I've only tested the first case (LibreOffice installed via the LibreOffice PPA / Ubuntu repos).

Thanks to seekngeek and orgulhogeek for the icons; via Atareao.es

LibreOffice PPA Updated With LibreOffice 3.3.3 For Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal

4:31 PM

LibreOffice 3.3.3

A quick update for Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal users: LibreOffice 3.3.3 has finally been uploaded to the LibreOffice PPA.

LibreOffice 3.3.3 was released about two weeks ago and according to the release announcement, it only comes with bug fixes:

"LibreOffice 3.3.3 fixes several bugs and improves the security of the suite, to specifically address the needs of corporate deployments, where stability is more important than new features. This branch will be maintained until the end of the year, to allow a smooth and safe transition to LibreOffice 3.4.x".

To upgrade to the latest stable LibreOffice 3.3.3 in Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal, use the commands below:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:libreoffice/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

If you were using the LibreOffice AppMenu (Global Menu) extension and it's not working anymore, fix it by reinstalling it (thanks to Tarek for the fix!):
sudo apt-get remove lo-menubar && sudo apt-get install lo-menubar

Unfortunately, the PPA hasn't been updated with LibreOffice 3.3.3 packages for Maverick or Lucid yet. I'll update the post once Ubuntu 10.10 or 10.04 packages for LibreOffice 3.3.3 are uploaded to the PPA.

LibreOffice Google Docs Sync Addon "Ooo2gd" Now Lets You Upload Files Without Converting

12:25 AM

A while back we wrote about an OpenOffice addon called "Ooo2gd" which lets you synchronize your documents with Google Docs, Zoho and WebDav servers (either manually - when you're done editing the file, or automatic sync; you can also import files that are already available on the server).

LibreOffice upload to Google Docs

Well, you'll be glad to know that Ooo2gd works with LibreOffice too. Also, the latest Ooo2gd version (3.0.0), released earlier this month comes an option to upload to Google Docs without converting the files (so you can keep the original file format).

Note: Because Google Docs (and its API) is still in beta, sometimes you may not be able to log in to your account. Usually, this happens with Google Apps accounts and it doesn't seep to happen with regular Google accounts but still, if you're getting a login error, most probably this is the case.

Install LibreOffice / OpenOffice.org Google Docs sync addon "Ooo2gd"

Before proceeding, please note that I've tested the instructions below with LibreOffice from the Ubuntu repositories / the LibreOffice PPA so the instructions may not work if you've manually installed the LibreOffice .deb files downloaded from the LibreOffice website!

To use Ooo2gd with LibreOffice or OpenOffice.org in Ubuntu, follow the steps below:

1. You need to install Sun Java from your Linux distributions repositories.

In Ubuntu, enable the partner repository and then search for "sun java6" in Ubuntu Software Center or Synaptic or use the command below to install it:
sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin

2. For LibreOffice, install "libreoffice-java-common":
sudo apt-get install libreoffice-java-common

For OpenOffice.org, run the command below:
sudo apt-get install openoffice.org-java-common

3. Close LibreOffice / OpenOffice, download the latest ooo2gd in your home folder (~/) and run the following command in a terminal:
unopkg add ~/ooo2gd_3.0.0.oxt

LibreOffice Google Docs sync

Once installed, open Libreoffice Calc, Writer, etc. and you should see a new floating toolbar which you can use to upload your documents to Google Docs, Zoho or a WebDav server.

I recommend using your full email address as the username for Google Docs because in my tests, using the username only sometimes fails.

Now use the new toolbar (which you can drag to your main toolbar) to sync files with Google Docs or Zoho - once you click the "upload" button, a dialog will pop-up and you'll have to enter your username and password. There are also some options available here, like keeping the files in sync (automatically), convert to Google Docs format, etc.

If you're not seeing the floating toolbar or you've encountered some other issue when installing Ooo2gd, check out the known issues page.
