Install Lubuntu Software Center (Lightweight USC Alternative For Lubuntu 11.10)

Lubuntu Software Center is a new project that aims to be a lightweight alternative to Ubuntu Software Center, for Lubuntu (Ubuntu based on LXDE).

The project is in its early development stages, but you can already browse various software categories, install or remove software or see detailed package information. To install some applications you must click the "Add to the Apps Basket" button and then head over to the App Basked where you must click the "Install" button.

Also, just like in Ubuntu Software Center, you can select to see all packages or only "real" applications. This can be done by clicking the "Preferences" button above the categories and selecting between "Beginner" or "Expert" modes. But, unlike USC, Lubuntu Software Center displays the dependencies that will be installed for your selected packages:

There are no fancy features in Lubuntu Software Center and everything is very basic for now - no ratings, comments, history and so on (although some of these might be implemented in future versions). But in the end, that's the whole idea: create a lightweight, fast and simple software manager for Lubuntu. Although maybe Python isn't the best way to achieve this.

Install Lubuntu Software Center

Lubuntu Software Center is available in the Lubuntu Desktop PPA so if you're using Lubuntu 11.10, use the commands below to install it:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:lubuntu-desktop/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install lubuntu-software-center

Once installed, press ALT + F2 (or open a terminal) and type: "lubuntu-software-center". If it doesn't start (that was the case in my test), run the following command:

leafpad ~/.config/lsc/LSC.ini

And remove the spaces in front of each line in the LSC.ini file.

Lubuntu Daily ISO Finally Available For Download

After 3 unofficial releases, Lubuntu was accepted to become a part of the Ubuntu family back at the Ubuntu Developer Summit in Budapest. It's still not 100% certain that Lubuntu will become an official Ubuntu flavor starting with version 11.10, but it's getting there, especially since you can finally download Lubuntu 11.10 daily builds starting today.

Julien Lavergne, the Lubuntu project leader:

After 2 years of work, and 3 "unofficial" releases (10.04, 10.10 and 11.04), we had recently an official go from the Technical Board and ISO images are now made like other Ubuntu flavors. I hope the 11.10 will be the 1st official release of Lubuntu as a member of the Ubuntu family.

Lubuntu uses the LXDE desktop environment and among the default applications are: Chromium browser, Openbox window manager, Pcmanfm file manager, Abiword and Gnumeric for office work, Pidgin IM, Audacious music player, Gnome-mplayer and of course, most of the LXDE components.

Note: selecting "Try Lubuntu" fails with today's daily ISO, but selecting "Install Lubuntu" should work (see this comment if you have trouble logging in).

Lubuntu 11.10 Default Theme "Ozone2" Gets Revamped

Lubuntu is a lightweight Ubuntu flavor that uses LXDE. According to the Ubuntu Developer Summit that took place earlier this year in Budapest, Lubuntu will finally be considered an official Ubuntu flavor starting with 11.10.

The default Lubuntu theme - Ozone2 - has been revamped for Lubuntu 11.10:

The new Ozone2 theme is based on the Zukitwo; the reason for this is that Zukitwo comes with both GTK2 and GTK3 versions which gives an unified look for all applications.

We've already featured Zukitwo on WebUpd8: it's a beautiful light theme (comes with 3 variations but only one will be available for Lubuntu) that uses the Pixmap / Murrine engines for the GTK2 theme and Unico for the GTK3 version of the theme.

The LXPanel was also updated and uses a dark background:

Please note that Ozone2 is not finished so it may look different in the final Lubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot release.
