Raspberry Pi Computer Goes On Sale

1:29 PM

Raspberry Pi

Raspberry Pi, the credit-card sized computers running Linux, are finally available for purchase. For now, only Model B, which costs $35 is on sale and the number of available units is limited to 10.000, so if you want one, hurry!

Also, today's sales are limited to one per customer but you should be able to buy as many as you want in about a month or so.

For those not familiar with Raspberry Pi, here are the system specs:
  • CPU ARM1176JZF-S 700 MHz
  • Storage capacity SD Card Slot (SD or SDHC card)
  • Memory:  256 MiB (it was announced today that both will have 256 MiB)
  • Graphics: Broadcom VideoCore IV, OpenGL ES 2.0 , 1080p30 H.264 high-profile decode

The main difference between Model A and B is that B includes an Ethernet port and 2 USB ports.

To buy the Raspberry Pi, head over to Premier Farnell or RS Components and search for Raspberry Pi. Unfortunately both websites are pretty slow / unreachable right now because apparently, everybody wants a Raspberry Pi.

Update: Raspberry Pi has confirmed on Twitter that the Farnell stock has been sold out and apparently, RS Components is only taking pre-orders for now.

The Raspberry Pi Computer Is Finally Being Manufactured

7:30 PM

Raspberry-Pi

Raspberry Pi, the "$25 computer" running Linux, is finally being manufactured and the first units will be available at the end of January. I've used "$25 computer" in quotes because most of you know it by that name, however, the $35 computer known as Model B is the one is being manufactured. Model A ($25) will follow later on:

Raspberry Pis started being made a couple of days ago [...] This means that the first units from the first batch will be rolling off the line at the end of January. This first batch will consist only of Model Bs, although you will be able to buy Model As later on. Details about whether we’ll wait for all 10k to come off the line before starting sales, and about what date we’ll be starting on, will come later;

For those not familiar with Raspberry Pi, the "$25 computer", this is a credit-card sized computer created by a charitable foundation called "Raspberry Pi Foundation" that was initially supposed to use Ubuntu by default. Because of "issues with newer Ubuntu releases", Raspberry Pi will ship with Debian, Fedora or ArchLinux.

Raspberry Pi comes with an HDMI and an USB port so you just plug it into a TV or some other device that has an HDMI socket, connect a keyboard via the USB port and get a fully-configured system.

System specs:
  • CPU ARM1176JZF-S 700 MHz
  • Storage capacity SD Card Slot (SD or SDHC card)
  • Memory: 128 (Model A) or 256 MiB (Model B)
  • Graphics: Broadcom VideoCore IV, OpenGL ES 2.0 , 1080p30 H.264 high-profile decode

While Model A doesn't come with an Ethernet controller (model B does), it can connect to a network by using a user supplied USB Ethernet or Wi-Fi adapter.
