Pinguy OS Mini 11.10 Released

4:41 AM

Pinguy OS Mini 11.10 Shell - a stripped down Pinguy version -, has been released today. Just like the full edition, Pinguy OS Mini is called "beta", even though this is most probably the final version (more info about the reason behind this in our Pinguy OS 11.10 post).

Pinguy OS Mini 11.10 looks just like the full Pinguy version: 2 Docky instances, Conky and the same GNOME Shell extensions, but other than that, there are only a few applications installed by default: Nautilus, GNOME Tweak Tool, Firefox, Boot Repair, Cover Thumbnailer, GNOME Mplayer, Y PPA Manager, Bleachbit and a few other system tools.

But of course, the tweaks are all still there: zRam, various Firefox extensions, and so on. The codecs and Adobe Flash are also installed by default.

Pinguy OS Mini is for those who don't use most of the applications installed by default in the main Pinguy OS version and want to install their own applications, but still get the Pinguy OS experience.

Pinguy OS 11.10 (Final, Yet Beta) Released

8:43 PM

Pinguy OS 11.10

Pinguy OS 11.10 has been released today and comes with GNOME Shell (on top of GNOME 3.2.1) as default. Even though this is most probably the final version, it's called "beta":

I am very doubtful that there will be another release of the 11.10. Until Shell can work without 3D acceleration I am not happy calling this a stable product. [...] I don’t feel Gnome 3.2 is mature enough to be called a stable product and thats why Pinguy OS 11.10 will stay as a beta release.

- Pinguy

For those not familiar with Pinguy OS: this is a Linux distribution based on Ubuntu that comes with many applications installed by default as well as a huge list of tweaks or fixes, making it a great Ubuntu alternative for those who want everything working out of the box.

GNOME Shell

Pinguy OS GNOME Tweak Tool

Pinguy OS 11.10 comes with many GNOME Shell extensions installed by default, most of which you've seen on WebUpd8:
  • System Monitor
  • User Themes (to easily switch between GNOME Shell extensions)
  • Media Player (media player controls on the top bar)
  • Window Navigator (keyboard selection of windows and workspaces in overlay mode)
  • Auto Move Windows (get some applications to always start on a specific workspace - see how to use it here)
  • Shutdown menu (adds "Shutdown" entry to the user menu)
  • Workspace Indicator (displays current workspace and lets you switch between workspaces)
  • GPaste (clipboard manager)
  • Cardapio (menu)
  • Removable Drives (display removable drives on the top panel)
  • Global Menu
  • Native Window Placement (uses a 'natural' algorithm for displaying the thumbnails in the activities overview)
  • Notifications (moves icons from the shell tray to the top)
  • Weather
  • noa11y (removes the accessibility icon)
  • Window List (display a window list on the panel).
The Weather and Window List extensions are disabled by default and can be enabled from GNOME Tweak Tool (which is installed by default).

Most of these extensions have been added to provide an experience similar to what Pinguy OS users are used to, even though they are now using GNOME Shell instead of the GNOME 2.3x desktop.

As for the artwork: Pinguy OS 11.10 uses Zukitwo GNOME Shell theme by default, Zukitwo Resonance as the GTK theme and elementary for the window theme. The icon theme is the same as in the previous Pinguy OS releases: elementary.

For easily switching between windows, there's a Docky instance at the bottom and there's another Docky instance on the left which lets you easily access various folders.

Default applications

Pinguy OS 11.10 has replaced the Linux Mint Main Menu (which doesn't work in GNOME Shell) with Cardapio:

Also, most GNOME 3 applications (GNOME Contacts or GNOME Documents) are included by default in Pinguy OS 11.10, however, Pinguy OS uses Gloobus Preview instead of Sushi. Further more, all GNOME Packages have been updated to version 3.2.1 - this includes Totem which is at version 3.0.x in Ubuntu 11.10. And as mentioned above, GNOME Tweak Tool has also been added to the default application selection.

Oh, and our Y PPA Manager has also been added by default.

Most of the other default applications are the same as in Pinguy 11.04: Firefox, Deluge, Dropbox, Empathy, Gwibber, Skype, TeamViewer, Thunderbird, XChat, LibreOffice, Shotwell, Rapid Photo Downloader, Pinta, Docky, Cover GLoobus, Nautilus, Shutter, Brasero, Calibre, wxBanker Finance Manager, Boot Repair, Gparted, Synaptic, Cheese, Arista Transcoder, HandBrake, VLC, XBMC, OpenShot Video Editor, gtkpod, DeVeDe, Clementine, Ailurus, Ubuntu Tweak, Wine and so on (but of course, they are updated to the latest version).

And finally, Pinguy OS continues to use GDM by default, despite the fact that Ubuntu has switched to LightDM.

Other changes in Pinguy OS 11.10:
  • zram, preload and Granola are installed by default
  • better HD Video Decoding using libcrystalhd3
  • XBMC-PVR is installed so you can use your PC as a DVR

Opinion

Even though Pinguy OS 11.10 (along with Linux Mint 12) provides one of the best out of the box GNOME Shell experiences, there are a few things that could have been better: the Activities Overview button shouldn't have been removed in my opinion. You can still use the Activities though, by pressing the Super/Win key.

Also, providing an usable classic (fall-back session) would have been nice too. Right now, the indicators don't show up in the Pinguy OS 11.10 classic session top panel and this could have easily been fixed by using the patched Indicator Applet we wrote about a while back. This is of course only for those that can't run GNOME Shell so it doesn't affect the majority of users.

Other than that, Pinguy OS 11.10 is great for both those who want to use it because it comes with cool GNOME Shell tweaks as well as those who simply want everything working out of the box and don't care about the desktop environment used by default.

MATE edition

This won't be the only Pinguy OS 11.10 release! An edition running MATE as default should be available too, but according to Pinguy it's going to take a while before it's released.

Pinguy OS 11.10 GNOME Shell Edition Pre-Alpha Available For Download

7:59 PM

Pinguy OS 11.10 gnome shell

A quick update: Pinguy OS 11.10 GNOME Shell edition pre-alpha is now available for download. According to Pinguy, it's called "pre-alpha" because it's still missing a lot of stuff, but other than that it should work just fine.

Download Pinguy OS 11.10 GNOME Shell edition pre-alpha (32bit only for now).

Pinguy OS 11.10 GNOME Shell Edition Screenshots

8:04 PM

Pinguy OS is a Linux distribution based on Ubuntu that comes with many popular applications, tweaks and other customizations by default.

Pinguy OS 11.10 will come with two editions: a GNOME Shell edition as well as a GNOME 2.3x edition (either using the old GNOME 2 or using Mate, a GNOME 2.3x fork). The release date is not yet known, but it's usually a month after the Ubuntu release (though considering there will be 2 editions this time, it might take longer).

Pinguy has posted some Pinguy OS 11.10 GNOME Shell edition screenshots on the official blog and it looks great so far! Judging from the screenshots, it seems like Pinguy OS 11.10 GNOME Shell edition will continue to use some of its old features: Docky or Conky by default, but also integrate some of the best GNOME Shell extensions: from the Music extension to System Monitor, GPaste, and so on.

Further more, Pinguy OS GNOME Shell edition will use a new menu: Cardapio (instead of Linux Mint menu) which as you probably know, is now available as a GNOME Shell extension:

Pinguy OS 11.10

(the screenshot is a bit broken)

Also, it looks like the GNOME Shell Global Menu extension will be integrated by default too:

As for the default theme, it seems Pinguy OS 11.10 GNOME Shell edition will use Zukitwo Resonance by default (see screenshot above) and Zukitwo GNOME Shell theme.

And finally, the notification area has been moved to the top bar and the clock is on the right:

Pinguy also mentions that this is just the beginning and there is still a lot of work to be done. But even at this stage, it looks simply great.

What do you think?

Pinguy OS For Netbooks Released: Ping-Eee OS 11.04

2:10 AM

Ping-Eee OS

Pinguy has released Ping-Eee OS 11.04, an Ubuntu-based remaster especially designed for netbooks:

This was built and compiled using the ASUS Eee 901 Netbook and designed from the ground up to run on netbooks.

It comes with Jupiter (which has Super Hybrid Engine support) and Granola to help with the power consumption and most applications from Pinguy OS: Docky, Nautilus Elementary, Firefox, Thunderbird, Skype, LibreOffice, Dropbox, Deluge, Empathy, VLC, Deja Dup backup tool, Linux Mint Update Manager, Wine and more. There's also Clementine instead of Rhythmbox.

However, some of the applications available in the main Pinguy OS have been removed either because they make no sense on a netbook (e.g.: burning software) or because they use a lot of memory (Gnome DO, Glipper or Vineyard).

Ping-Eee OS also comes with extra WiFi drivers for many devices which are not normally supported out of the box on other Linux distributions, downgraded Compiz (to version 0.8.6 to avoid some problems that exist in Ubuntu 11.04) and many other tweaks and fixes.

One thing I don't agree on is using Docky by default: it's too heavy for a netbook and is not great for screen real estate either. A regular GNOME panel on the left or right with DockBarX seems a much better choice, at least in my view. Here's a screenshot from an old "Ubuntu netbook optimization" post on WebUpd8 to get an idea on what I mean - that was before Unity was announced by the way.  But of course, many of you might like it and also, you can always customize Ping-Eee further and use DockBarX, AWN or any other panel/dock, they are all available in the PPAs/repositories available in Ping-Eee OS.

Pinguy OS Mini 11.04.1 - A Stripped Down Pinguy OS [Uses Compiz 0.8.6]

8:21 PM

Pinguy OS Mini 11.04.1

Pinguy OS is a Linux distribution based on Ubuntu. The latest version - 11.04.1 is based on Ubuntu 11.04, but comes with the Classic GNOME 2.32.1 desktop instead of Unity.

Pinguy has launched Pinguy OS Mini, a stripped down version of Pinguy OS which comes with all the tweaks and fixes that are available in the main Pinguy OS 11.04.1, but without most of the applications preinstalled in Pinguy OS.

Pinguy OS Mini 11.04.1 comes with only a few applications installed by default: Mplayer, Firefox, Flash and Java so opening the browser will let you browse the web without having to tweak or install anything, as well as Gedit, GNOME Terminal, Ubuntu Software Center, Mint Menu, Docky, Conky, GNOME Do, Nautilus Elementary and Gloobus Preview which give Pinguy OS Mini the same look and feel as the main Pinguy OS.

Also, just like the updated Pinguy OS 11.04.1, Pinguy OS Mini comes with Compiz downgraded to version 0.8.6 so using it, you shouldn't be experiencing any of the bugs that occur because of Compiz in Ubuntu 11.04 (that's why it's called Pinguy 11.04.1 - the the only change in .1 is the downgraded Compiz).

All the repositories Pinguy OS comes with are also added by default in the Mini version so all the applications available in the main OS can easily be installed without too much effort from the user.

There are Pinguy OS Mini ISO files available for both 32bit and 64bit, both being under 700MB in size (despite the size reported by Sourceforge).
