MATE Desktop 1.2 Released, Install It In Ubuntu [GNOME 2 Fork]

5:26 PM

mate desktop environment

MATE is a GNOME 2 (which is now unmaintained) fork that lets you use the old GNOME 2 interface. It uses renamed packages and applications so it doesn't conflict with GNOME 3 and you can have both MATE and GNOME3 installed in the same time, something which isn't possible with the vanilla GNOME 2.

MATE 1.2 has been released recently, and its developers say this is a huge step forward and the latest version is more stable than ever.

Changes in MATE 1.2:
  • an undo/redo feature has been added to Caja, the default file manager (Nautilus 2 fork)
  • There are some new applications / packages: Mozo (Alacarte fork), python-caja, caja-gksu (like nautilus-gksu, but for Caja) and Caja Image Converter (similar to Nautilus Image Converter)
  • mate-open is a lot faster
  • Mate settings daemon now supports the PulseAudio and GStreamer backends
  • New MATE icon and renamed MATE themes to avoid GNOME conflicts
  • many bug fixes (most importantly, all GNOME conflicts have been fixed

Install MATE Desktop Environment in Ubuntu 12.04 or 11.10

Before installing MATE in Ubuntu, please note that MATE is a pure GNOME 2 fork, so it doesn't support Ubuntu appindicators, there's no Ubuntu Sound or Messaging menu, etc.

MATE has its own Ubuntu repository, available for Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot and 12.04 Precise Pangolin. To add the repository and install MATE Desktop in Ubuntu, use the following commands:
sudo add-apt-repository "deb http://packages.mate-desktop.org/repo/ubuntu $(lsb_release -cs) main"
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install mate-archive-keyring
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install mate-core

The last command above installs only the packages required to run MATE. To install some extra packages like Mozo (Alacarte fork), MATE Netspeed, MATE Sensors Applet, MATE System Tools and others, use the following command:
sudo apt-get install mate-desktop-environment

In my test, MATE Desktop worked ok under Ubuntu 11.10, but there were some issues with MATE Settings Daemon in Ubuntu 12.04: the GTK theme wasn't applied correctly. I was able to fix this by adding "MATE" to "OnlyShowIn" for the /etc/xdg/autostart/gnome-settings-daemon.desktop file.

How to remove MATE from Ubuntu

If you want to remove MATE Desktop, you can use the following command:
sudo apt-get remove atril atril-common caja caja-common engrampa engrampa-common ffmpegthumbnailer-caja libcaja-extension libmarco libmate libmate-common libmatecanvas libmatecomponent libmatecomponentui libmateconf libmatecorba libmatedesktop libmatekbd libmatekeyring libmatemenu libmatenotify libmatepanelapplet libmatepolkit libmateui libmatevfs libmateweather libmateweather-common marco marco-common mate-applets mate-applets-common mate-backgrounds mate-conf mate-conf-common mate-control-center mate-corba mate-core mate-desktop mate-desktop-common mate-dialogs mate-icon-theme mate-keyring mate-media mate-menus mate-mime-data mate-panel mate-panel-common mate-polkit mate-power-manager mate-power-manager-common mate-screensaver mate-session-manager mate-settings-daemon mate-settings-daemon-common mate-settings-daemon-gstreamer mate-system-monitor mate-terminal mate-terminal-common mate-text-editor mate-themes mate-vfs mate-vfs-common mate-window-manager python-mate

If you've install the extra MATE packages (mate-desktop-environment), use the following command to remove them:
sudo apt-get remove libmatesensorsappletplugin mate-calc mate-desktop-environment mate-netspeed mate-sensors-applet mate-system-tools mate-utils mozo python-mate-menu system-tools-backends

Linux Mint Debian Update Pack 4 Goes Stable (Cinnamon, GNOME Shell And Mate Included)

12:39 AM

linux mint debian cinnamon
Cinnamon

Linux Mint Debian Update Pack 4 is finally considered stable and is now available for all LMDE users. The update replaces GNOME 2 with GNOME Shell (although it's possible to "freeze" LMDE to GNOME 2) and it also brings Cinnamon and Mate desktop, so LMDE users can choose from three GNOME-based "shells".

With this update, the Kernel is also updated to version 3.2, Firefox and Thunerbird to the latest stable version (11) and more.

LMDE Mate desktop
MATE Desktop

An updated Linux Mint Debian ISO should be available in the coming days and it will use MATE 1.2 (with working Compiz) as the default desktop, while Cinnamon will be available as a secondary desktop.

Until then, you can download the existing LMDE iso and upgrade to the latest LMDE Update Pack 4 following the instructions on the Linux Mint blog. Once you're running the latest updates, you can install Cinnamon or Mate using the following commands:

- for Cinnamon:
sudo apt-get install cinnamon
- for Mate:
sudo apt-get install mate-desktop-environment

Linux Mint Debian Update Pack 4 On The Way; To Bring Cinnamon, GNOME Shell And MATE

5:49 PM

Linux Mint Debian (LMDE) is a rolling release distribution based on Debian Testing.

LMDE Update Pack 4, which will include Linux Kernel 3.2, Mate Desktop 1.2 (a renamed GNOME 2 desktop), Cinnamon 1.4 (GNOME Shell fork), GNOME Shell 3.2.2, KDE 4.7.4 and Xfce 4.8, "is being prepared and tested at the moment" and should be available soon.

In a comment, Clement Lefebvre, the Linux Mint Project Leader, has specified that a new respin of LMDE ISOs will be available too when Update Pack 4 will be released. He also stated that it hasn't been decided yet if MATE or Cinnamon will be made default and if they will both be on the ISO, but "both will be fully supported".

If you don't like any of the desktop environments available with LMDE Update Pack 4, you'll be able to avoid the update, keeping GNOME 2, by changing the software sources as explained on the Linux Mint blog.

Install Linux Mint Debian Update Pack 4 (testing only!)

LMDE Update Pack 4 can already be tested: download LMDE from HERE, then install Update Pack 3 using the Update Manager and then, to install Update Pack 4, you'll need to add the Linux Mint Debian testing repositories - to do this, run the following command in a terminal:
gksu gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

And replace the contents of this file with the following repositories:
deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/incoming testing main contrib non-free
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/incoming/security testing/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/incoming/multimedia testing main non-free

linux mint debian update pack 4

Then open the Linux Mint Update Manager, click "Refresh" so the software sources are updated and LMDE Update Pack 4 should be available for installation.

After the upgrade, only the GNOME Shell and GNOME Fallback sessions will be available:

lmde gnome shell
LMDE - GNOME Shell

To install Cinnamon, use the following command:
sudo apt-get install cinnamon

lmde cinnamon
Cinnamon

To install MATE, use:
sudo apt-get install mate-desktop-environment

lmde - mate
MATE

Then log out and select MATE / Cinnamon from the GDM login screen.

Linux Mint 12 To Use GNOME Shell By Default, MATE Might Be Included On The DVD Too

2:15 AM

According to a new LinuxMint blog post, Linux Mint 12 will use GNOME 3 with GNOME Shell by default. For those who prefer the classic GNOME 2.3x desktop, MATE (a GNOME 2.3x fork) will probably be included on the DVD edition.

Linux Mint 12 will use MGSE (Mint Gnome Shell Extensions) which makes it possible to use Linux Mint in a traditional way: a panel with a menu and window list on the bottom, switching between windows and not applications, system notification icons on top, classic ALT + TAB and more.

Among the extensions included in Linux Mint 12 are: bottom panel, classic ALT+TAB, MediaPlayer, noa11y, user theme, alternative status menu (shutdown menu), window list, smart overview as well as a cool new menu extension.

Here's a screenshot:

Linux Mint 12 GNOME Shell

And of course, you can easily disable any extension that you don't want to use.

As for MATE, it will be available on the DVD edition if the existing bugs are fixed. MATE looks and behaves just like GNOME 2.3x, but it has an advantage: it doesn't conflict with GNOME 3, so both can be installed on the same system. However, some conflicts still exist, which block MATE from being included on the Linux Mint 12 DVD, for now anyway, but hopefully the bugs will be fixed in time for the Linux Mint 12 release.

Linux Mint releases are usually made around 20th of November, but as usual, the Mint release date is not fixed so expect Linux Mint 12 "when it's ready". The blog post also mentions that a release candidate should be available on 11th of November at the latest.
