The beautiful AwOken icon theme has been updated a couple of days ago and it includes a new AwOken White icon set so it's now possible to choose between three different icon sets: AwOken, AwOkenDark, and AwOkenWhite.

The new version also comes with full support for Unity (Ubuntu Oneiric) as well as improved GNOME Shell integration. Also, the AwOken PPA finally provides packages for Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot.

Other changes in AwOken icon theme 2.3:
  • redesigned toolbar and messaging icons
  • new LibreOffice icons
  • a huge list of new / redrawn icons for Muon, TeamViewer, Weather Indicator, VirtualBox Indicator, Kdenlive and many more

Here are a couple of AwOken icon theme screenshots:

To install AwOken icon theme in Ubuntu, use the commands below:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:alecive/antigone
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install awoken-icon-theme

For Kubuntu, install "kawoken-icon-theme" instead of "awoken-icon-theme".

To customize the icon theme, run the following command in a terminal (you need to run this at least once!):
awoken-icon-theme-customization

Then follow the instructions.

To change the icon theme, either use GNOME Tweak Tool ("sudo apt-get install gnome-tweak-tool") or Dconf Editor ("sudo apt-get install dconf-tools") and navigate to org > gnome > desktop > interface and manually enter the icon theme name under "icon-theme" (you can find the exact theme name by going to ~/.icons/ folder).

If you're not using Ubuntu, download AwOken via DeviantArt.

AwOken Icon Theme 2.2 Brings Gnome Shell Tray Icons Support, More

5:43 PM

Awoken icon theme 2.2

AwOken, an amazing Gnome (works great with both Gnome 2 and Gnome 3) icon theme was updated yesterday, getting support for Gnome Shell tray icons. The new version (2.2) also comes with fully revamped audio, network, battery and arrow icons as well as 371 new small size icons and some new/revamped icons.

Here are a few screenshots:

The theme comes with a customization script so you can select how the folder, home, trash and other icons look from a huge list (for instance there are about 42 folder icons you can choose from):

Awoken customization

Installation - Ubuntu

AwOken comes with an Ubuntu PPA, but the latest version hasn't been uploaded to the PPA yet. Update: the latest AwOken is available in the PPA for Ubuntu 10.04, 10.10 and 11.04 - add the PPA and install it using the commands below:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:alecive/antigone

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install awoken-icon-theme

For Ubuntu 11.10, you can manually download the Natty .deb from HERE.

Once installed, run the following command in a terminal to start the customization script:
awoken-icon-theme-customization

Manual installation

1. Download AwOken icon theme 2.2 from DeviantArt, extract the downloaded archive and the two resulting archives and place the "AwOken" and "AwOkenDark" folders in the ~/.icons directory (if it doesn't exist, create it).

2. To be able to use the customization script, run the commands below:

sudo apt-get install zenity imagemagick

cd ~/.icons

sudo cp AwOken/awoken-icon-theme-customization /usr/bin

sudo cp AwOken/awoken-icon-theme-customization-clear /usr/bin

sudo cp AwOkenDark/awoken-icon-theme-customization-dark /usr/bin

awoken-icon-theme-customization

The first command above will install Zenity and Imagemagick, required by the AwOken customization script. The last command runs the script.

After you finish the customization, the script will ask you if you want to apply the AwOken icon set - this is actually not working if you're using Gnome 3 (at least that was the case in my test). To apply it in Gnome 3, use GNOME Tweak Tool (available in the Ubuntu 11.10 repositories).
