Pinta 1.2 Released [Image Editor]

7:38 PM

Pinta is a cross-platform, simplified image editor based on Paint.NET, designed to serve as an alternative to more advanced applications like GIMP, for casual users. The application features drawing tools, unlimited layers, includes over 35 image effects and adjustments and can be configured to use a docked interface or multiple windows.

Pinta 1.2 has been released recently and comes with some new features as well as lots of bug fixes. Changes in Pinta 1.2:
  • New text option: fill background
  • Added image preview to Images pad
  • Added autocrop
  • Reduced height of toolbar by 10px in Linux to avoid wasting space
  • Individual layers can now be rotated arbitrarily
  • Added specific mouse cursors for tools (pencil, paintbucket, etc)
  • Image previews are now displayed in the Open File dialog

There's no Pinta 1.2 official release announcement yet so for a complete list of changes, see the Pinta Github page.

To install the latest Pinta 1.2 in Ubuntu 11.10, you can use the official stable Pinta PPA:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:pinta-maintainers/pinta-stable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install pinta

The latest Pinta 1.2 in the PPA is only available for Ubuntu 11.10, but until the PPA is updated, you can manually download and install the Pinta 1.2 deb in Ubuntu 12.04 - download it from HERE.

For other Linux distributions, download Pinta via GitHub (there are no Pinta 1.2 Windows and Mac builds yet).
